Much of What I Need to Know Is in Genesis 1, 2

“All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” is a collection of essays written by Robert Fulghum, a Unitarian Universalist minister, that was first published in 1990. It was Fulghum’s way of looking at life and deciding what was really important. Listed below is a synopsis that he gave in that particular essay.

“Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life—learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. Wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup—they all die. So do we. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned—the biggest word of all—LOOK.”

Reading that list and then watching people via newspaper, internet, or T.V. and one soon realizes that either many didn’t go to Kindergarten or they failed that year of school. There really is a whole lot of wisdom in those few lines.

However, our purpose here is not to examine Fulghum’s well-known essay, but to use his idea as a launching ground for this blog essay. The more I study the Bible the more I realize the importance of the book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. So much of what we really need to know (but not everything) is included in the first two chapters of Genesis. Look at just a few items.

First, it tells us from where everything comes. “In the beginning God…” God, the creator was always there. Everything came from His mind. He owns everything by right of creation. He spoke things into existence. He started time. He has all power. He is awesome. We really shouldn’t mess with Him.

Notice that there is no argument for the existence of God. An argument is not needed. He is! Captain Obvious is not needed to explain God. He just is!

Some things are accepted simply because they are!

When there is lightning and thunder all over and one walks into a building soaking wet with an umbrella in hand there is no need for someone to ask, “Oh is it raining outside?” The evidence is overwhelming.

Likewise with God. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).

Toward the close of chapter 1 we find mention of the creation of mankind. Details are given in Genesis 2. One verse stands out especially for today. Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

As if Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created…” wasn’t enough, Moses under inspiration of God writes that God created man and he did it in His own image. God created “male and female.” Please notice that is ALL that God created.

In doing an internet search I found articles saying that there are 63 genders, 76 genders, 58 genders, 72 genders, and 112 genders. Apparently, those promoting the idea of more than two genders can’t even agree among themselves.

Let me help clear up the question by simply going to Genesis 1, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” God did it. He created Male and Female. Neither a surgeon nor psychiatrist decides the sex of a person. God created male and female and decides at the time of conception.

Surgery may change the plumbing but not the chromosomes. Men are born with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. Women are born with two X chromosomes. Differences come with that Y chromosome that men have.

Should that athlete who has the Y chromosome be allowed to compete against XX chromosomes just because he never wins against those of his own kind? Bruce Jenner has a Y, and a gold medal from the Olympics. Today he parades as if his Y doesn’t exist but then he says that it is “unfair” for Ys to compete against XX.

I am so reminded of Abe Lincoln’s famous question about the tail of a dog. “If you call the tail of a dog a leg, how many legs does it have?” The answer came back 5 to which Lincoln supposedly said, “No, four! Just because you call the tail of a dog a leg doesn’t make it one.”

It makes no difference that Bruce calls himself Caitlyn or that Paul calls himself Paula. The fact remains, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

(Sideline fact: The year before the back page editor of The Christian Standard decided he wanted to “change,” he didn’t cite the Bible in his writing as much as he cited poets and philosophers. Romans 1 comes to mind here.)

This is becoming a very dangerous time for mankind. Everywhere we look we see those who want to change the creation of God. Every TV program seems to have its obligatory member of the LGBTQIA community on air and flaunting their mistaken views of creation. When Harvey Bream, George Faull and I were invited to go to Canada and speak to a group of ministers, we were warned against speaking against homosexuality or even mentioning it.

Parades are held to promote their lifestyles and there is no shame. The closets are now empty, but the streets are full. The rainbow that God gave as a sign and a promise that He would not destroy the earth again by water has been hi-jacked by them as their sign. What they fail to realize is that it is a sign that God will keep His Word and destroy the world again, this time not by water. Every time they hoist their flag, they are really promoting the idea that God keeps His Word.

Later in Genesis (Genesis 18-19) God tells what happens to those who try to confuse the issue like those who lived in Sodom.

They can change the laws. They can say that there are thousands of different genders. They can deny the existence of God Himself. But the fact remains that God created “male and female he created them” and only them. God will not be mocked! “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life” (Galatians 6:7,9).

My friend Tom Wolf stated as a former gay man; “People are not their sins. Sin is behavior that people do. For example, a liar is not a type of human but a human who lies.
The church should affirm that all humans are created in God’s image and all humans fall short of the glory of God. This is no more or less true for the LGBTQ community. However, the LGBTQ community has stated that their sins are their identity. This is an error in understanding of reality that the church should not accept.” Tom Wolf.
